Sharks Honour Players at
Awards Night 2008
The Cornish Sharks American Football Team honoured its star players who helped give the Sharks their second successful season when they won 7 of their 10 regular games and went through to the second round of the play-offs losing only to the eventual division champions.
It was a fun night for all the team, sponsors, club members and their families who gathered to celebrate the teams success and also to honour their team members in a variety of categories including Best Player, Best Rookie, Coaches Player, Player’s Player, the Hammer Award (for the hardest hitter), Clubman’s Award, Special Recognition Award and a Journeyman’s Award for the player who travelled the furthest to training and matches.
A hearty buffet was provided by Treusi Limited, one of the team’s sponsors, and a disco and karaoke was laid on by Paul Rees ensuring the party went with a swing until late. Ginsters, another of the team’s sponsors, provided a superb celebration cake and highlight of the evening was presentation of the awards.
Head Coach Brian Smallworth summed up the evening “It was great to see so many of the team, sponsors and supporters here with their families to celebrate our fantastic season and honour many of our players. For such a young team in only their second year to make the playoffs for the second year running is a momentous achievement and it is right to award those players who made a significant contribution to that success. The Player’s Award is a special one as the players themselves vote for the winner and this year, for the second year running, it went to Reggie Jackson who had a fabulous season scoring no less than 16 touchdowns. Reggie is a real inspiration to the players. The Coaches Player Cup is my award for players who I see as having a lot of potential, and this year it was shared between five players, which just shows the talent I believe we have on our team. Three players also entered the Cornish Sharks Hall of Fame – Chris Pattee, Durben Matthews & Ricky Tanner as well Coach Bob Shaw who was part of the coaching staff in our first year. The Awards evening is a great time to thank all our supporters and especially our sponsors, without whom the club wouldn’t have enjoyed such success.”
